I get many emails from readers who explain how they lost hope in their plans and how giving up seems like the best option for them. Some of those people explain in their mails how they tried over and over to get things to work without getting results while others explained how they got demotivated because of other reasons.
In one of Steve Jobs' interviews he said the following: "I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did."
Can you find any hidden meanings behind that phrase?
If you spent some time thinking about it you won't take much before you realize that Steve jobs felt like there is no hope and that he had no reason to go forward except his passion. When he says that the only thing that kept him going is the love for what he did he is actually referring to the fact that all other factors were pushing him to stop.
This is the one fact so many people don't know about success. All successful people felt like quitting on their way.
When i started 2knowmyself years ago things weren't good at all. I was struggling to find readers, i was hardly making money out of the ads and i wasn't being encouraged by anyone. After all the idea of quitting my day job to work on a blog seemed irrational for all the so called sane people i knew back then.
And i thought about quitting.
You might wonder how many times i thought about quitting?
In fact the days were i thought i should quit were more than the days i thought my blog can be popular (at least in the early days).
I still remember how i sat down one day and kept asking myself why am i going forward. During that day i started to believe that i might be moving in the wrong direction but the only thing that kept me going forward is that i had nothing else to work on. Today 2knowmyself is worth more than a million dollar because of its sales figures (See my book How i did it)
When i read the success story of Ben Silbermann the founder of Pinterest i noticed he said a similar phrase. He mentioned that the only thing that kept him going was fear of embarrassment. He was a Google employee and he quit to work on his new project Pinterest.
After sometime he lost hope but he couldn't face the people who would blame him if he stopped working on Pinterest so he continued moving forward only to end up as a young billionaire.
No matter how tough a person is, the quality of education he got or his past experiences he will still feel like quitting during his journey. After all no one wants to keep working without getting results, no one wants to do boring tasks everyday without getting paid and no one wants to trade his freedom for a project that doesn't seem like it can make it.
But all the success stories of famous people point to one important fact. Those people felt like quitting but they kept going for one reason or another. I do agree with Steve Jobs that passion can keep you going when nothing else motivates you but you can still make it without having that passion.
Its just that your journey is going to be much more painful without passion since you will be doing something that you don't like everyday without getting results. But if you kept going forward whether you had passion or not then most probably you will make it.
I have managed to become a self made millionaire at the age of 28. This didn't happen by chance because i already wrote that goal down five years before i accomplished it. Becoming rich is not about luck, starting big or being intelligent but its all about having certain beliefs about money and life.
