When we feel depressed, the first thing that comes to mind is our need for some time off to put ourselves at ease and take a break.
But let me ask you a question, as food for thought. When we are tired of work we take a break, and when we’re tired of wearing a certain shoe we take a break from wearing it. What about depression, something that is already moving around with us, will going to a trip or staying at home make it go away?
Before we answer this question more accurately, let’s take a look at it from different aspects.
Let’s have a look at what research says when it comes to taking a break from your own mind. The first natural tendency is to push away the thoughts that are bothering you. Unfortunately many studies have shown that thought suppression doesn’t work. They will come back to haunt you and are here to stay.
You know why? The way the human being functions is incredibly amazing and nothing is happening for no reason really. Even though depression is an awful feeling to experience it is still undeniably there for our own good.
If we didn’t feel negative feelings, we wouldn’t feel the need to change our situation. Consequently, depression feelings are sent from your subconscious mind as a signal to push us to get up and do something about our problems. (see also The best treatment for depression)
If you decide to take a break or some time off to feel better, you may experience less stress resulting from the current work at hand, but will the depression go away? No it will never go away on its own because the reason it visited you wasn't dealt with yet.
Another way we naturally respond towards depressive thoughts is to put ourselves under stress. Does this work? Well sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, at least for a temporary time, let’s have a look at both.
When tested scientifically, it was found that more stress increases our negative emotions and rather than being a distraction it actually makes our depressive thoughts come back stronger. Oops! That’s not a really good idea, is it?
In my book, The ultimate guide to getting over depression i said that if you distracted yourself you will bury the problem deeper in your subconscious mind and as a result it will send you more horrible feelings in order to notify you about them.
I am not saying that taking a break is a bad idea but taking a break without having a plan is the bad idea. If you take a break and let your mind wonder off, it will only fill in more negative thoughts and retrieve everything that is bothering you.
If you want to take a real break from depression and enjoy your time off, I advise you to write down the things that are causing you these negative emotions in your life and start putting a plan on how you will solve them. In other words, take a brake from life and work on fixing the reasons that caused this depression.
The reason for this is that it has been found that our mind tends to think negatively 80% of the time. Again this is not for a wrong or inaccurate reason; it is there to keep the human being protected and up working on whatever is best for them if they’re not doing so.
So unless your break allows you to solve your problems it might result in even more bad emotions. Take a break but do your best to come up with a great plan during it.
