During childhood kids start to develop certain identities as a result of the experiences they pass through.
If the child was always bullied by his friends then he might believe that he is weak and so develop the identity of being a week child.
Children develop many identities during their childhood and as a result they start to love anything that would bring them closer to the identities they like and hate anything that brings them closer to the identities they hate.
I know a guy who hates suites from the bottom of his heart after analyzing his thoughts and beliefs i made him discover that the main reason he hates suits is that they bring him closer to the geek identity he used to hate when he was a child. Somehow he connected formality with conformity and being a geek (because geeks were usually the ones who conformed the most in schools).
so what does all this has to do with people who love each other?
One of the biggest reasons people fall in love with others is wanting to get closer to a certain identity.
If a girl was raised to believe that girls are weak then most probably she will become attracted to strong men. If a guy was raised to believe that he is unloved then he is most likely to fall in love with the woman who makes him feel important.
just as we love things that bring us closer to the identities we prefer we love people who bring us closer to these identities and we avoid those who remind us of the identities that we don't like.
I know a girl who plays guy's sports, who likes to wear black and who is a typical tomboy. That girl certainly won't love the guy who will bring her a teddy bear or a pink bag but instead she will become attracted to the person who will reinforce her boyish identity or who will make her believe that she is strong.
