Lets suppose you made a car accident that resulted in small damage to your car. How would you feel in each of the following cases:
1) You parked the Car and went to the movies right away
2) You went to study
3) You took the car to the mechanic right away and left it there
In case a similar situation happened to you before it wont take you seconds before you realize that solution 3 is the one that will make you feel good right away (or at least better).
In my book The ultimate guide to getting over depression i explained how taking immediate actions is the best thing you can do when you face a new problem.
Even if you don't have a solution for the problem that just happened or even if you are totally clueless you will still feel better as soon as you allocate some time to think about the solution.
As soon as you free that time your mind will feel more in control and it will start to think that you are now on the right track to solving that problem and this is why your mood will improve. (See also Why keeping yourself busy never works)
Now what if your daily schedule was too tight that you weren't able to allocate the needed to time take actions? Well, this is what most people do and that's the reason why new problems knock them down.
If you are always busy or if you are too attached to your daily routine then any new problem will put an additional weight on your back that will never be lifted.
If you are too attached to the number of hours you sleep each day, to the repetitive tasks you do on daily basis or even to the daily routine then you will collapse whenever a new unexpected problem happens.
And because life is anything but structured busy people suffer the most when something that they never planned for happens.
You must have at least 2 hours each day that you can use to solve the unexpected problems you come across. I know what's in your mind now, you are wondering how you can free 2 hours each day just because one day something wrong might happen?
Well here is the trick. Those two hours shouldn't be free but they should include an activity that can be immediately dropped in case an emergency happens.
For example you can add in your time table a 2 hour reading period. In case anything happens you should stop reading for few days and use those 2 hours each day to solve that problem. As soon as things stabilize you can return back to your reading habit.
Now some people are too attached to what they do each day and this leaves them with no time to respond to life challenges and as a result they feel helpless when an expected problem happens.
You might think that those people do important stuff each day but in fact most of us are attached to unimportant things that we do each day.
Are you too attached to the number of hours you sleep each day?
Are you too attached to a show that you watch on daily basis?
Are you too attached to an activity that you do each day?
Then you will become very weak. Unless you manage to have a zone each day that can be replaced immediately life problems will crush you.
Whether we like it or not we get exposed to a tremendous amount of negativity in our lives. If we didn't balance this negativity with an equivalent amount of positivity we will certainly become pessimistic, sad and eventually depressed.
