No this is not an article about highly sensitive people as i covered that topic thoroughly in that section.
Few years ago i was giving a session about the psychology of love and how people confuse the different emotions they have , such as attachment, for love. Suddenly one of the audience stood up and shouted in a sad voice "no, this is not love , no this is not love".
When i tried to calm her she kept repeating the same words "No, love can't be like that, no , no". The woman was about to cry. Her voice was getting weaker as she kept repeating different variations of the same statement.
Obviously this woman was a too emotional person. We were discussing scientific facts and she went on in a totally different direction thinking with her emotions. She was too shocked to find some facts that she didn't like and so she decided to defend herself by being emotional.
What a makes a person too emotional?
There were many people in the session but only one reacted this way. Why did that person become very emotional where as others didn't? Moreover, why did she become so emotional when i discussed that topic?
The simple answer is : The difference in their belief system.
This woman had certain beliefs about love but those beliefs weren't just normal beliefs. They were beliefs that helped her survive. This woman knew that surviving can only happen if she believed in those beliefs and defended them with all the power she had. See also Why do people stick to their incorrect opinions.
I have said earlier that we get emotionally attached to the beliefs that help us become emotionally stable. After all if we maintain our psychological stability through certain beliefs then we will do whatever it takes to defend those beliefs even if they were wrong.
But what about the other audience?
Why didn't they do the same?
The other audience might have had some of the beliefs that woman had but they didn't mind changing them after knowing that they weren't 100% correct. In other words some people can hear about new beliefs and ideas without getting emotional while others can get extremely emotional when this happens.
Of course each person wants to preserve his own beliefs but the problem with that woman is that she had so many wrong beliefs that normal talk offended her and made her emotional.
Many of the emotional people you come across simply see life from a different angle because they have totally different beliefs than the most. This is why a word that seems meaningless to most people can turn that personal very emotional.
That woman also lacked courage. Even if someone heard about new beliefs that didn't match his own he can still reject them in a clam way but when a person gets emotional it means that he got very scared. For that woman it wasn't about not liking what she heard but it was all about not knowing what to do if my words turned out to be right.
What she really meant was, 'this can't be love, for if this was love then how can i survive later on?'
